HOMELESS

HOMELESS

A Poem by Julie Grenness
"

A theme of homeless youth in Melbourne, Australia.

"

HOMELESS.

History of the homeless,

Society does not bless,

So unlike birds homeless,

Flying afar and so free,

Nestling into any tree,

Waking up so chirpy,

Not like humans homeless,

Society does not bless,

All these homeless young--

Did they get enough hugs?

Or was it too many drugs?

Or sexual abuse of their youth?

What's the history of the homeless---

Society does not always bless.

I like your poetry. It seems natural and unforced. Some of the poetry on this website seems, well, “tortured.”

I was briefly homeless for six weeks. It was a horrible experience. Overnight I became a “non-entity.” There was a feeling of being disconnected from the world. I have great empathy for the homeless now. What's that old saying, “Walk a mile in someone else's shoes?”

This one hit me in the heart. I was, and still am, in the boat of the so many you speak of. It is not easy and society does turn their back to us and say "It isn't our problem. You sort it out." No one offers help to these teenagers and young adults that so often find a place of solace within a car or under a bridge. We starve ourselves because all too often we have been told that we would not find a hand out here. We are merely looking for a meal to keep the pain away. Too many times people have looked at my ball-point pen covered wrists and shake their head. All I have to say is it is better than a blade.
