A DAY At THE UNICORN RACES.A Story by Julie GrennessA unique race day, in the rural area of Victoria, Australia, bit of fun.A DAY AT THE UNICORN RACES..... The showers on the displays of flowers had cleared away. Sunshine appeared. The cars progressed to the epic Grand Annual Steeplechase in May. Warrnambool had turned on a perfect day for the races. The crowds poured through the turnstiles. Gremlins one and all, adorned in brilliant finery for the Fashions on the Field. The glossy racehorses and steeplechasers were groomed and paraded. Food vendors filled the atmosphere with enticing aromas, hot coffee and cool drinks, all at a price. The bars commenced a roaring trade for the traditional entertainment. Good food, good friends, good company, good rural hospitality. All was well. The races were broadcast on loudspeakers and giant television screens, adding to the mounting expectations and disappointments of the betting ring, the call of the card. First race! The jockeys arrayed in their colourful silks, a vivid scene, gleaming horseflesh, jewel like jockeys, the gremlins' frocks, bright sunny skies. All the whips were gathered to the fray. The starter appeared on his platform. "They're off!" Suddenly! A stampede of mystical sparkling unicorns raced past the horses, like a cloud. The unicorns floated above the turf, in a magical glittering haze. The gremlins in the crowd were thrilled. "Race Ya!" the unicorns called to the racehorses, valiantly galloping. Hooves pounded. "Great Grass! Eat my dust!" The unicorns called. The gremlins cheered the race of the millennia. First past the post, the Unicorns! Loud applause, the gremlins rose to their feet as one. The Unicorns galloped down the straight, and disappeared into imagination, leaving only hoofprints in the turf of time. That was the day at the Unicorn races.
