![]() Somewhere Over the RainbowA Story by Jukebox![]() An unfinished story. The beginning of a "series" - if I get the time to complete it.![]() One day after school, fifteen year old Lillian VanGovin approached her house with a slight sliver of hope that today would be different than the past days. She walked through her front door to hear her parents fighting once again. It was just like every other day in the past weeks. Something she dreaded to come home to. She walked back out and shut the door behind her. She stood on the porch with her eyes closed and fists clenched feeling the hopelessness of the situation weigh on her shoulders. Immediately following was a loud enough shattering of glass and more raised voices that were audible enough for her to make out. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Tiffany VanGovin, her mother, screamed. “It was too much at the time!” Her father, Evan VanGovin, yelled back in response. Lilly was having a difficult time coping with the new decibel range her ears had been subject to lately. She just couldn’t bear to hear her family go down in flames; it’s all she ever knew and all she ever had. Her entire life was moving from one place to another. Her father was a detective and traveled all around the world solving mysteries. They never settled down in the same spot before they were whisked off to a new country. When they were able to settle down for a good few months she was allowed to attend a local private school, which was where she was at currently, but most of the time she was home-schooled which was the reason for her having no friends; it was just her and her parents. She didn’t understand how the only two people who had ever claimed to love her could hurt her the most. Was it her fault for all the arguments? What else could they be arguing about? Taking one step at a time she walked as far away from her house as she could without getting lost. She focused her attention on the snowflakes that were coming down more and more frequently and then decided to button her coat up more to keep from getting sick on top of all the other circumstances. The streets were deserted, there were hardly any cars in the driveways, no lights were on in the houses, and the snow piled heavily on everything in sight. A shiver shook her body and a single tear streaked across her pale, frozen face. Solitude had never felt more real. There was a child’s swing set in the distance that drew her closer and pressed her forward. Her pace quickened and soon she was jogging towards it as if it were her only hope. When reaching it she brushed off the gathered fluff on the seat and sat down. Her eyes slowly and unexpectedly folded downwards with dreariness, and as she laid her head against the old rope she drifted far away from reality into black and all of its dismal surprises. Nightmares soon surrounded her closed eyes making her tremble in her own mind. Life felt so fragile, weak, and it no longer seemed worth all the pain. Her strings of hair crystallized with the wind blown snow, the still wet tear stain turned to ice against her glassy skin.
