What Once Was

What Once Was

A Story by Jukebox

Alan handed her a white rose one of which was a delicate beauty. Then he knelt down…

It was a cool summer's day. The last summer before life moved on. The air was fresh with the scent of roses and the sun was glowing as it submerged from its blue prison. Jocelyn was sprawled across the grass daydreaming when she heard footsteps approaching her. The maker of the noise stopped right next to her and leaned over so his head blocked the sun. She knew right away it was her beloved James. Something puzzled her though. Normally James would not have been so secretive. On any normal day he would have fallen over her and smothered her in a kiss. What was different about today? She held out her hands for him to pull her up. He hesitated, but grabbed them and pulled her to her feet. She wrapped her arms around him, but he pushed her back.

“James, what is it?”

“I’m breaking up with you.” He said in a monotone voice.

“What? Why? I thought we were in love!” She shouted.

“I did love you, Jocelyn, but things are changing.”

“What do you mean?”

“You don’t realize how great you are. You are perfect. I’ve realized that I’m not good enough for you. You deserve better. I won’t let you go through life regretting that you’ve chosen me. I won’t allow it. I love you too much, Jocelyn.” He reached inside his coat and pulled out a beautiful white rose. “For you.” She took it with tears overflowing from her eyes and tears streaming down her cheeks.

“I won’t regret it. That’s not true. You don’t have to do this.” She choked out.

“I do.” He kissed her forehead and turned around to leave her once and for all. She fell to the ground in sobs that soaked her rose.

…Jocelyn brought the flawless white rose up to her nose and smelled its divine aroma. She opened her eyes to release herself from the devastating memory. Alan was on his knee hoping to get ready to put the ring on her finger.

“Will you marry me?” He asked. A tear silently slipped down her cheek and plopped to the floor. She would never forget her first love. The one she was truly in love with. Deep inside she knew she could never have him because he would never take her back. Jocelyn had to stop regretting and thinking about once was. Someone finally loved her enough to be with her no matter what.

“Yes.” Jocelyn said with a smile as Alan slipped the stunning ring on her finger. While they hugged, five years later in celebration at a little Italian cuisine, James stood behind the counter ringing up an order as he watched a beautiful young woman he let go be proposed to by the man he told her he would make her wait for.
