A Twisted Mind

A Twisted Mind

A Poem by Jennifer Tutterrow

It's always there,
silently in the back of your mind.
Maybe you just
don't notice it sometimes.
All the noise,
all the laughter and voices,
they drown it's call out.
Ah, but when you go home,
to your quiet empty house,
then it gets it's chance.
It will stay quiet,
just silently pawing
at your frail mind,
knowing it has control.
You can try all you want,
but it will come back,
and honestly why wouldn't it?
You're easy.
You think too much
and that exactly what it likes.
It wants the ones that
stay in the past,
the ones who know
there's better out there.
It's a silent killer.
Knowing you won't tell a soul,
knowing it's home is in you,
no matter how hard you try
to drowned it.
Because the next morning,
when you've sobered up,
it's there again,
ready to strike.
And it will always be there.
Until one day.
That one day of bliss will come,
the day that it all ends.
Because at the bottom
of that river
lies a peace you've been seeking.
You're free from the demon,
but don't be fooled.
It's still alive,
tearing another down.
But this time,
it's in those you left.
One more gone,
and another one close behind.
