Navigation

A Poem by Jon Roggie

Memory is a tricky thing.
Time passes.
Perceptions change.

Times of joy become brighter.
The smallest things become landmarks.
Like lighthouses, they become something we look for and give us a sense of hope.

Times of sorrow take a different tack.
Like a reef beneath the calm surface,
sometimes a scrape,
other times, they gut you and sink you to the depths.

Learning to navigate the waters of the mind is tricky.

The lighthouse can make you complacent, feeling safe, ignoring the danger below.

Concentrate on the reef,
  and you miss the light,
  while sinking to the bottom.

Wow, this is the best one. I love the imagery it evokes. I can just see it like a Van Gogh painting, blues, blacks whites with lots of yellow light from the light house with a big swirling ball.

Message is awesome, at least my interpretation of it is. Favorite line is Learning to navigate the water of the mind is tricky.

Very well done. Serious, realistic, yet hopeful.

Jon Roggie,
"Navigation" is so good! Inside of our souls; this is who we are. The process of life emanates from within. You did such a wonderful job in giving this an image of treacherous reef to explain. "Times of sorrow take a different tack. Like a reef beneath the calm surface, sometimes a scrape, other times, they guy you and sink you to the depths. Learning to navigate the waters of the mind is tricky. ...............CONCENTRATE OF THE REEF AND YOU MISS THE LIGHT." it is so nice to see the solution in the last line! Great early poem you've given. kathy

Thank you, Kathy. I still think this is one of my best.
Concentrate on the reef,
and you miss the light,
while sinking to the bottom.

Life grants no guarantees ... either you go for it or stand still. Great penning, Jon.

Thank you. This one is still special for me.
I just wrote something with similar themes. I like this very much and the image of the lighthouse reminding us that we travel in dangerous waters. Prudence is required while navigating our way through life.

One of the first I put up here. Thank you!
This is brilliant, glad I saw it in the feed. You are exactly right about memories, and how we perceive them as time passes.

It's good. Love it.
This is such a relatable piece. The part that makes it memorable is the fact that you did not portray the subject at hand in a traditional manner. The imagery was crystal clear and emotion lingered in every word. Thank you for sharing.
