Backyard philosophy

Backyard philosophy

A Poem by Jon Roggie

It allows time for contemplation.
Simple surroundings leave the mind at ease,
  safe to drop the barriers,
and let my thoughts run free.

Scrub-jays chase the cats,
 protecting the freshly hatched.
Scolding the mockingbirds in the tree next door,
 mirroring apartments down the road.

Rose managed to grow through the fence,
 leaving the others behind,
reminiscent of some who made it beyond another wall,
and there is always another one.

Dissenting neighbors,
 each a mind run rampant,
fight their battles,
while they smile at those on the other side.

I decorate the yard.
Still image of the swirl in my mind.
Constant growth among the evergreen,
Study of the life amongst the milkweeds.

Beliefs echo the wind,
 growing,
  changing.

All of this while I tinker with an old barbeque grill,
seeing a change in its future.

My yard. Always filled with the kids. I enjoyed your thoughts and I agree. Can't stop change and we need to be like the willow tree. Flow with the winds of living. Thank you Jon for sharing your amazing words and thoughts.

in a sense just grilling in the backyard as we observe the birds, the flowers growing through the fence...
and yet...sure works in the sense of border walls, illegal aliens....and those who just want to escape to a better life...
sometimes old things can be made better, just like old systems...
building new ones isn't always the answer.
