Hawk in the wind

Hawk in the wind

A Story by Jon Roggie

Time on the road has its own way.
Changes pace on a whim.
Driver's focus changes depending on the road.

Copilot asleep by your side,
 occasional snort or snore.
Missing passing sights,
different kind of amazing from the day before.

Yesterday was blue herons,
 and egrets by the side.
Roads to the coasts full of surprises.
 Hidden in the ag lands,
pleasures to see.

Drive back is quiet.
Tired.
Quick coastal trip.
Concert night.
Memories, old and new.

  Same road,
  Different time of day.
  Different view.

No music playing.
No traffic.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
Hawks ahead.

One sits on the wire,
maybe ten feet to the side.
Watching,
 image of a hunter still.

Another seems to float,
no more than six feet off the valley floor.
Held by a wind,
 shifting by a feather's twitch.

Magical moments at 45.
