I almost missed them

I almost missed them

A Poem by Jon Roggie

Spent a day at the zoo.
Yes,
 I will admit it.
I feel more comfortable with the so-called animals.
Anyways,
 It was a school trip.
Interesting since the niece is on-line.
We show up,
and since the traffic was moving briskly,
  we were early.
Little bit of time to spend,
so we check a spot by the entrance.
I get to say hello to my fellow tortoise.
Wander back,
 and wait.
Niece spots her home room teacher,
or at least we are hoping it is her.
She is standing with a clipboard.
Call her name.
She got it right.
Sadly,
 nobody else shows.
The teacher soon realizes we know this zoo.
We go there almost every month.
Niece is rattling off the names given to the various inhabitants.
I still think the tortoise give me a nod.

We know how many of them have been rescued.
Ever seen a blind seal swimming?
  It is beautiful.
All of that is besides the point.
While walking around,
 we notice the small things.
Little local lizards,
 maybe little over an inch,
   are dodging through the plants.
Squirrels have been given their own plaques.
Red-tail hawks fly above.
We see this because we took some time.

We spend all our days looking, but rarely seeing beyond the fringes. You have captured perfectly the feeling of being a tortoise in a world of roadrunners. Whatever happened to just strolling along and having no plans further than the next corner? If only we took the time to see the details, life would be that little bit richer.

People need to learn how to take their time.
I like this. This could easily be my daughter and I or my son.

There is always something new. Plus, they have some great corndogs!
Yes, we have to give of our time to truly notice the little things Jon. The more you look, the more you see. Your day at the zoo with your niece sounded fun. If you go there once a month you are sure to be familiar with many of the animals.Little, local lizards what a lovely bit of alliteration that was. And I bet that tortoise did give you a nod.
