Lucille

Lucille

A Story by Jon Roggie

I am one full of stories,
and often find myself in the mix.
My part happens a few years later.

Friend of mine is from Maine.

Some might wonder why a white boy is listening to the blues.

Trust me.
He was also listening to the Ramones.

The thing is he was also learning to play.

Might as well learn from someone who the greats learned from.

This is where odd timing happens.

Still in Maine,
 working at a hotel,
    a tour bus arrives.
By this,
I mean a band tour bus.

Manager,
 knowing my friend's musical inclination,
calls him to carry some bags.

He gets to carry Lucille.

A few years later,
 I enter the scene.

Yes,
I have to be part of the story.
I am writing it.

B.B. King comes to town.

It happens to be around a birthday.

Somehow,
I even get two tickets for the price of one.
I was just picking up the tickets,
but I can't charge him for his.

It is his birthday.

So,
 we go to the show,
and we have some good seats.

Have you ever seen an artist react to your yell?

He yells "Preach it B.B."

B.B. points at him

Now,
just so there is no misunderstanding.

There is no question B.B. was pointing at him.

A few rows of the audience are looking .
The people next to us are looking .

My friend got a great birthday present.

Meeting B.B. King (and Koko Taylor), was the only good thing my ex done for me. She got an engagement ring, I got to go to a blues festival and meet two of my heroes. He wasn't at his best then, but even second best was better than anything else I've ever seen or heard. Sadly he passed not long after that, but I will never forget how friendly and sincere he was. Lucille can still make me cry when I hear her.

The first time I saw him was around 1997. Second time was around 1999.
i really love this story and can relate in an odd way...my second ex-wife met B.B. in a Bar in NY City and actually had a dance with him....said he was such a gentleman...she would have appreciated this poem immensely...

I went to two of his shows. He was a true class act.
