4 A.M. in Monterey

4 A.M. in Monterey

A Poem by Jon Roggie

This is what happens.
Tense before the drive,
  and again after.
Few hours of sleep,
but no reason to toss in my bed.
Time to explore.
Try to find a breakfast cafe.
  One for later,
    when they finally awake.
At least I can use it for an excuse.
Downhill walk,
  almost to the wharf,
and I am awake enough to dread the return.
Enjoying the chill,
 dressed in shorts,
   and t-shirt.
It is so quiet.
During the night,
 I could call this home.
Half past five,
 I wander uphill.
