Snowbank

Snowbank

A Poem by Jon Roggie

Snow surrounds me,
and it keeps falling.

Slowly sinking deeper.

Peaceful feeling,
and you stop noticing the cold.

The numb is comforting.

Let it all slip away....

I don't think so.

Stand up.

Brush myself off,
and head back to the fireside.

Reminiscent of the Scott of the Antarctic, "I may be some time" moment we have heard numerous times, yet thought little behind those few words and what they meant to the man, sacrificing himself in what for the lucky, is unimaginable horror, yet we feel ourselves shrinking into those thoughts for no fathomable reason, to be left to sink or swim, burn or freeze in fate's hand. The loss of hope on the horizon takes us to unwanted depths, where even the hope of hope diminishes, yet we somehow struggle to get back to the warmth and live to feel another day.
Evokes the pain and fear impeccably. Hope the fire keeps burning brightly.

and suddenly the standing up...the resolve to get past it all...

nicely said.
