Common voice

Common voice

A Poem by Jon Roggie

I was mistaken for a German exchange student.
It was during my first year of German.
I pick up accents.
I don't try to imitate.
I fall into it.
You hold a conversation,
and subtle things start to happen.
You start to sound like the person next to you.
Talking chameleon.
Now,
some would think I was taking it lightly.
Having a laugh.
No.
I stopped,
and listened.
Joined a conversation.
Connected.
All of our voices sound the same.

Love the simplicity of this Jon and know exactly what you mean. When I've been to the states in the past, I fall into copying the accents too. It's not intentional, just the natural flow of what you are hearing rubbing off on you. It's a great feeling when you realise that what you are hearing becomes accent-less and completely understood, and that is just with pretty much the same language, but I did notice the very little Spanish I know didn't go down so well so well, because of the Euro Spanish lisp in pronunciation. I couldn't get the hang of that because I know so little of the language.
