Beans and cornbread

Beans and cornbread

A Poem by Jon Roggie

Nothing fancy.
Simple meal you might remember,
but not one you will see on most menus.

Some would call it comfort food.

Let's be honest.
This is something which didn't cost much,
and you could feed a whole lot of people.

When I was young,
I didn't think about it.

I knew we would have that combination the first day.
Then, it would probably be beans and tortillas the second day.
I would wind up grating the cheese.

Before you think I am complaining,
this was good food.

Many times, while living by myself,
I would make a batch up,
and share it with my neighbors.

You could see their smiles,
and sometimes a glimpse of their memories.

Many of us remember one of these kinds of meals,
Something you were raised on.

A taste which brings back memories.
