I need to go to Bakersfield

I need to go to Bakersfield

A Poem by Jon Roggie

I might add a hundred miles,
  maybe more,
but it will be worth it.

This is how far I will go to make a friend smile.

Ever hear the song,
  "Streets of Bakersfield"?

Buck Owens wrote it,
  as far as I know.

Dwight Yoakum covered it.

We have both joked about it.

I am not far from there.

I can walk the streets of Bakersfield.

I just can't afford the hat.

If I want one, I will sneak into Mexico.
Very interesting collection of thoughts about Bakersfield, which I can relate to, becuz I grew up in a similar area, plus I'm familiar with Buck & Dwight & how they exemplify the Bakersfield persona. My favorite part is near the beginning: "This is how far I will go to make a friend smile" . . . this touches on one of my deepest disappointments in life . . . people never go see people anymore . . . a quick touching of bases online is about all we get anymore from so-called "friends". I think this personal touch is part of the Bakersfield state of mind, or at least, as I remember it. The "hat" comment is pretty funny, too.
