Conversation with my nieceA Poem by Jon RoggieI have no clue how to raise a child, let alone a young adult.
I guess this is a modern household,
at least one which happens. Three generations thrown together. My niece is fourteen, and my mom will soon turn seventy-five. I fall somewhere in the middle. Just a touch of context. Back to the conversation. A friend of her's was trying to convince her to watch a movie. Rated above both of their ages, but that was not the problem. She asked me about the movie, while on the phone, and I gave my opinion. She had already said the same. He kept pressing. I really didn't like that. First, she had told him her she wasn't supposed to go to R-rated movies. Second, he was going to try to get her to ignore the first point. Third, he wouldn't listen. I might be dragging this out. I had her pass along a simple message. If you ever want to be friends with my niece, never try to pull this kind of stunt again. I realize he won't take it seriously, but my niece does, and in a good way. It made it easier for her not to go along. She asked me what I thought if she had seen another movie, one which she had been told not to. I told her I was amazed she had waited until it was released on DVD. It wasn't the sneaking into something supposedly beyond your age, it was the pressure. Long story, brought to a senseless end. I have an eye on one of her "friends".
