The cold numbs the wounds,
  blood barely flowing.

Waiting for warmth,
  only then seeing the damage done.

I can relate to this physically from living in Rantoul Illnois and LaCrosse Wisconsin. With tempatures around -20 below zero you couldn't evaluate your injuries until you were inside. Isn't the job of the cold to freeze and preserve? The sad part of this is the true cost of this protection is realized when the truth warms up and we can evaluate the price more effectively.
