Begins with a hero

Begins with a hero

A Poem by Jon Roggie

I know my friends,
  always the hero.

This is only the beginning.

Settle by the fire,
  and I will explain.

A hot summer day,
  not even a cloud,
    not even a clue.

Then the screams,
  down the beach,
and not enough time to run.

Children overcome by the current,
  but one helped them out.

He didn't make it out.

While helping others escape from the currents,
trapped by the weeds below the surface,
    and he drowned.

Excuse me,
I must walk away from the fire,
       just for a moment.
