I know this may sound mean

I can't help but try to restrain a laugh.

Niece writing something for class,
  struggling to create the ending.

She may have knocked on my door,
  almost guarantee it,
    but I was dwelling on my own writes,
      sitting with the headphones on.

Now, if she had asked a couple of days ago,
  when the project was given.....

Yeah,
  it does sound mean.

I seem to have these kind of moments. Another was when I found out my sister in law paid way too much for food trays for my another niece's baby shower. I couldn't help myself. "You do realize I cook for a living?" Glad you like this one!
