To touch the fire

To touch the fire

A Poem by Jon Roggie

It is not because of a lack of feeling,
  just the callouses.

My fingers are smooth,
  barely a fingerprint,
    and it leads to a gentle touch.

I know,
  sounds confusing.

Over the years,
  I have burned my hands,
   more times than I can count,
    taking away some feeling in the process.

So,
  I can only judge by the strength of my touch,
    and I simply restrain,
      using only a feather's touch,
         and a whispered caress.
