...but I'm not you

...but I'm not you

A Poem by Jon Roggie

As a child,
I remember you leading your friends.
You seemed the one to always seemed to choose.
  The games being played.
  The cartoons being watched.
Just wanted for them to like me,
  ...but I wasn't you.

As a teenager,
  You were the cool kid,
  one of the pretty people.
  Wore the best clothes.
  Drove the best car.
Everyone wanted you at the party.
I seemed to be allowed to be along only as a side note.
I thought it might happen for me,
  ....but I wasn't you.

As an adult,
  years after struggling,
  life is good.
  Family is full of love,
one that cherishes and protects each other.
Still what could it have been like,
  ....but I wasn't you.

One night at home,
  watching the news,
  I see the story.
I see what has happened and what you have become.
  Where you are.
First time in my middle-aged like,
  it finally hits me.

Thank God.
  I was never you.
