The Draft

The Draft

A Story by Jon Roggie
"

This is an idea I believe I first saw in a comic book many years ago, Legion of Super-Heroes, if I remember.

"
Knock on the door.

Annoyed at the interruption,
  she rushes to the door.

"What!  I am in the middle of something!
Last thing I need to see right now is some obvious government rep."

"Excuse me, but according to the new legislation,
  you have been selected."

"What the hell are you talking about!
I despise what has become of what was once a great dream.
Now you just have egotistical idiots trying to gain more power with each election.
You're telling me they have once again did something that interferes with a simple citizen?"

"I'm sorry, but a new type of draft has been put into place.
After all the outcry, and finally against the will of those who seek office,
the citizens have decided to choose the one who is most capable to take care of the country.
Not chosen by party, but by ability."

"What are you talking about!"

"Madam President, your term will follow until the people feel you have completed the job,
or until somebody else is better suited.  If we could select young people to defend the country,
just because of their age and health, why can't we choose someone to lead us by their ability?"

"Oh, crap...."
