The Art of Education

The Art of Education

A Poem by Jon Roggie

How do we learn?

It's not just reading a book.
It's not just showing up to class day after day.
It's not just trying to keep your eyes open during a very dry lecture.

For me, it has always been the interactions.
Sometimes just one phrase or example,
leads to an opening into another world.

Just one moment.
Just one conversation.
Even just one irate complaint.

Suddenly, something will just click.

"That's all there is to it?"
"Why didn't I see that before?"
"You've got to be kidding me!"

Memorization is not learning.
Knowledge is the base.
Application is the goal.

How we interact leads to some great possibilities.
From initial contact,
til the time the goal that was set,
  is finally met.

All in all,
  it comes back to it.

There is an art to education.

This is a first for me. I wrote this for an upcoming event at a school where I cook. One of those team building activities to help the morale of staff and faculty. Any feedback would be appreciated.

And indeed there is and "art to education".

"For me, it has always been the interactions.
Sometimes just one phrase or example,
leads to an opening into another world." So true! As with reading on this site, getting glimpses into other people's interpretations opens the mind to so much more than we find by ourselves. Nicely done and good observations.

i agree with learning through experience, and that is well shown on the poem. Nice!

Thanks! My problem with this one is that it felt forced. I think I rushed it.
