Tall Tale Heart

Tall Tale Heart

A Poem by J. Travis Grundon

When she arrived I knew she had driven an hour or more

Yet it was all I could do to answer the door

I knew what I had to tell her was sure to hurt

She was happy to see me and she wore my favorite shirt

She looked so cute, I felt like a jerk

But there was no way a long distance relationship would work

She told me she loved me and handed me a letter she had wrote

But all I could feel was a lump in my throat

I swallowed it back and tried not to choke

I handed her back her ring, which made her cry as I spoke

I tried to tell her she had done nothing wrong

She was an excellent kisser and we have had fun

I just thought that it was time for us to move on

What I didn’t tell her is that I had already found someone

So she got in her car and headed back home

But don’t worry about me, I wasn’t alone

I was just off to bed, when I was called to the phone

I then heard a voice tremble in an unhappy tone

“Thanks to a drunk driver Amy was gone”

Somehow I decided to milk it for all that is was worth

I’d turn these feelings of shock into feelings of hurt

I said I’d give up anything if I could turn back time

When the truth is it wouldn’t change my mind

I said a lot of things and kind of made myself cry

I said that I still loved her, but that too was a lie

The day after the funeral, I remembered the letter she had scribed

Like a voice from the grave it made me feel creepy inside

For all the letter said was:

“without your love I die”
