Empty Apartment

Empty Apartment

A Poem by Jaclyn
"

based off the format of "Abandoned Farmhouse" by Ted Kooser

"

She was sharp, say the books,

Strewn across the floor,

their pages worn and frayed.

And she was small, say the tiny dresses,

Still hanging from the line,

dancing in the breeze.

The postcards on the table say that she was loved,

By a boy far, far away,

waiting patiently for her.

The plants on the counter mourn her green thumb,

As they wilt in the blazing sun.

The old couch creeks in dismay.

She didn’t have much, it says,

But still she left us behind.

She’s off to travel the world,

Say the magnets on the fridge,

Speaking of places she had never been.

She’s gone to find the boy,

Still waiting patiently for her,

Says the open door,

That watched her walk away.
