The LegendA Chapter by Jason AgainThe introduction to The Witch's House.
The legend says that there once was a young woman who lived in a very small town. Some were weary of her personal doings and life away from the others, but not many thought too much on it. That is, not until she was caught "red-handed". A young couple were on a walk through the woods that lied around their home. Of course, they wanted to break from the trail and go find a place to be totally alone. What they didn't know was that they were soon to find a ritual site of the young lady. There was a small fire in the middle of an opening, and she was doing some sort of dance around it. The evidence claimed that this was the doing of a witch and nothing else. The couple hurried back to town and brought their peers together. They discussed this issue and decided to have nightly watches waiting for her to go back out. A few nights later, she stepped out to have a bit of her own time. Completely unaware and at peace, she had no idea what was coming to get her. Just as soon as she could take one step into her sacred spot, she was grabbed away. Interrogation is nothing pretty and she showed her discontent. She took one good kick at the man holding her and drove herself quickly back into the dark of the trees. The mob had no hesitation and decided it was to end that night. Breaking off into small groups, the townsfolk combed over the small forest rapidly until she was caught. Once they had their hands on her a rope was thrown around her neck and over a tree branch. A few of the strongest young men grabbed the end of the rope, and pulled. They held the poor young lady in this position until her feet no longer kicked. They carried the limp body back to the clearing and threw her into the fire pit to be done with forever. The woods had expanded over the many years since this account and had absorbed and covered all traces of anyone having ever even taken a walk beyond the tree line. The story was a long-told tragedy and did a fairly good job of keeping the children inside the town. The trees were said to be haunted with the spirit of the witch searching for anyone to pay for what was done to her. Then again, kids will be exactly what they are and take little adventures no matter what you say to scare them. And that is what puts us where we are today... © 2008 Jason Again |
