Black Jacket

Black Jacket

A Poem by Jessica Samuelsen
"

This was a prompt given given at a poetry workshop today

"
No nonsense chic
Classy, Casual
interpretation
is in the eye
 of one's mood
Black goes with everything
so they say
is this jacket
suits my withering confidence
A child like
perceptive
starts to grow up
decimated by
society's normal
no one can see
my faltered sense of self
when I wear
my black jacket
add some pearls
and I am invincible

Do you mean by wearing black jacket and some pearls you can gather confidence
and become invincible?
I have no idea of a poetry workshop.
Could you explain how it works to groom someone as a poet?

I really enjoyed the concept of social blending here...well done!

Line 8 and 14 seem very awkward and really distracted me, causing me to backtrack a couple time through your poem. Personally, I think the last line underscores (what i think is) your point...I'd keep it.

Do you read any of Allen Ginsbergs work? If not, you should because you remind me of his very jazzy, rhythmic writing style. I think your poem would be much more powerful ending on an image, and you have a great image going with the black jacket and the pearls. I'd cut that last line completely. You don't need to tie up your poem with a pretty bow--you've already said the last line in the poem. End on pearls and you've got something pretty swell.
