If Godzilla had Roller Skates

If Godzilla had Roller Skates

he’d be a happier lizard.
Zipping and gliding down the highway to Tokyo,
he’d stop for calamari in the Sea of Japan
where overly concerned mothers of castle-builders
call their children back from the waves. While they tremble
under striped umbrellas, Godzilla has an atomic barbeque.
The women scream as scaly appendages come towards them.
Roaring in delight he uses the flimsy parasols as toothpicks.
Brave boys in their mothers' arms
point in wonderment, coveting the monstrous skates
as Godzilla leapt on the road, asphalt soaring then colliding into sand.
On the shoulder of the freeway there'd be a quick catnap
where, snoozing in the sun, he’d be as content as an iguana
whose belly is full of crickets, resting under a new sunlamp.
Nightlife in Tokyo would spring to life when
sporting the metallic gear and eager to show off some moves,
Godzilla makes his way into the nearest roller rink.
On the floor, he'd hear the latest synthesized pop hit
and see pulsating lights. Crashing through the roof,
squishing the DJ and concession stand workers
the lights and music would die in a dust cloud.
Godzilla would have to find the next hotspot.
Several clubs later, the army rolls into the city in tanks with missiles
hunting the King of Monsters down.
Near Tokyo Tower, Godzilla sees the trembling tanks and wonders:
Why are these men are so unhappy?
He’s only looking for a party-- to have a good time.
The men have speakers, a stereo and a mix tape in their tanks,
there are lights from the city and bars stumbling along the strip,
bartenders don't worry about Godzilla's tab, only their insurance premium.
If the swarming soldiers would crank up some tunes,
and loosen their lips from their whistles everyone could have a great time.
The world's papers wouldn't report the events the next morning, however,
another quandary would befall the journalists,
not why Godzilla trashed the city, but
Godzilla Has Roller-skates! Where did he get them?
    Story continued on 3-A.
