The Apology

The Apology

A Poem by JohnB
"

Just a collection of images and thoughts I had while trying to make sense of a broken marriage

"

Planned through destiny

Prepared by thought

Perfected through experience

Meeting you was a lesson in brilliance

Warm spring sun sparkling off the lake

reflected in your eyes certainly not fake

Enveloped in blossoms galore

your presence within them made the roses sing encore!

The fountain ceremoniously shaped like a turtle

joyously shared its bounty without hurdle

How could something so divinely provided

carry an undercurrent of doubt

it was only a reflection, dear Sherlock

of a life filled with withouts

Fences shabbily mended not as strong as could be

couldn't stand the dark clouds

known only as me

Misperceived events

while veritiously merited

were neither black nor white

whose truths were thus ferreted

So now a search for meaning ensues

whose journey just begun

will only end in happiness

when the untruths are undone

My wish for you dear friend

if I could be granted just one

is a heart that's learned true forgiveness

or a heart that's been earnestly won

Strong use of vocabulary. Great work!

Oh man- this is heartbreaking. From the ingrained memories to the metaphors for folly it hits the reader with some startling truths that most of us will have experienced- or will at sometime. There's no worse feeling than wanting to say sorry for past mistakes and misdemeanours and not having the opportunity to do so, (I'm still waiting a decade later actually, but knowing she's alive and well and happy partly offsets my regret). As such i found the last stanza particularly profound- it took me a around five years to stop wishing for the same, (though truth be told, i probably never truly will stop). This is a very skillfully expressed and emotive piece prompted a cranial resurgence of my past indiscretions and foolhardiness and also reminded me of what i have now, (a wonderful woman and two beautiful daughters who i don't always appreciate enough- it's time to address that, so thank you for writing this).
Thank you for the read on my poem too, take care, spence
