Speedy Checkout Down

Speedy Checkout Down

A Poem by JR

I waive the Hispanic guy to go in front of me
in Walmart already packed no speedy checkout
him with his two cases of cheap beer American colors
and other assorted crap, I didn’t see
already packing my own nick knacks on the conveyor
(fresh canvas, masking tape, watercolor paper in generic brand
also American colors)
and he’s gone
as the checkout lady clacks the divider into its designated lane,
the Hispanic guy,
but turns to waive and nod before he goes
because they had been calling me and
I let him cut;
overall a much better experience
than the old white lady
who got in line behind me
with dust in her creases and
who smelled
like she s**t in her pants.
