Become the Beast

Become the Beast

A Poem by JR

So the question I guess is

do I embrace the monster that is me?

Give into greed and thievery

give into the curse words and the slamming of hands

on endless tables

while the blood beats beats

behind the temple

that is the Temple

that is me?

Give into lunacy and chase the moon?

Howl like a beast a beast that lost its reason

from eating bad meat

and the blood beat beat beats

like a drum that calls the ceremony

that raises a red old moon?

Should I stay still and calm

and cast out all the parts of me that are wrong

that don’t fit the bill to be an upstanding citizen

get along and be that cog

which turns the wheel?

The question is should I be me

or should I give in

become the beast?

Sounds as though the speaker has done some rigorous self examination but not with an open mind. Certain religions sanction self condemnation, but in fact it only makes things worse. Only when we accept the less attractive parts of ourselves as they are can we manage them. Flogging the beast only makes him more determined to break out of his cage.
