Enough

Enough

A Poem by JR

We didn’t have enough

we didn’t eat to make sure

we fed the baby, then babies

and she’d say, it’s not enough

so I’d lean into work side hustle

sell what I could and earn the rest

through chords and needles

and she’d say, it’s not enough

we had a little house in a

broken neighborhood full of frail

old people and young criminals

she grew roses in the front,

gourds in the back

we learned to eat with the kids

and she’d say, it’s not enough

we had a big house in a

polished neighborhood of

pharmaceutical grins and warm

plastic handshakes

and she said, this is enough,

you can let it go; But

once you get going with “not enough”

you have a tendency to just keep

going and she said, stop man

but I couldn’t, I feel this big gaping

void staring us down from years

ahead and behind both

and so I pushed and

I pushed and it destroyed us and

still I push what he f**k? Maybe

I don’t really know what

enough actually is.
