Street

Street

A Poem by JR

She said she was street like I wouldn’t

know what that means

she said she’d learned all the passwords

the codes, the head nods,

the handshakes that would get her

into the houses where you get high

she said she knew the city park

golden hour seen through a haze

of cigarette smoke and smog

(like I wouldn’t know what that means)

she said she tasted honeydew and

lost her f*****g mind like I wouldn’t

know that sweet sugar residue

left idling on the tongue

she said she’d gotten the bone and

that hurt a little but damn damn

she’d given as good as she got

she stitched a map back on her skin

with indelible ink in loops and swirls

goddamn this world for what it does

to a little girl;

She said she was street and thought

I wouldn’t know what that means.

This reminded me of "Precious" by Depeche Mode...in a way.
