Fields

Fields

A Poem by JR

Today I am as barren

as those yellow fields

just starting to show their green

I am scraped white

like the sky under

it’s long scrim of cloud

light as the powder of snow still

gracing that horizon

sweep of granite

I thought I wanted

carnivals and mystery

barkers with their taunting calls

I thought I wanted

fun houses and hayrides

baseballs games, corn dogs, concerts

I thought I wanted

musicals and symphonies

arrogant poets with their angry words

I thought I wanted

cacophony and catcalls

I thought I wanted

the riot but now

now lying here

while the sun rises my sweat

in these barren fields

just now showing their green

I feel I am finally at home,

finally at home

with being alone.
