Water, And The Sky

Water, And The Sky

A Poem by JR

The diving board took her body, flexed

and launched her over the lake in a gentle arc

arms above her head, palms out, as she was taught

Lycra of her white suit caught heliographs

and for a moment, just half a breath

she was in-between the pull of the water

and the weight of the sky

then her fingers found the surface,

did the trick they do

and her body folded in, swallowed whole;

Later lying in the sun on bleached wood stained blond

towel warm beneath her, she dreamed of boys

not knowing within two years she’ll be pregnant

not knowing within two years she’ll be hooked

not knowing within two years the weight

would press her down

and she could drown beneath the pull;

But for that one moment, a half-breath in time

she was completely suspended

between the water, and the sky.
