Ellie

Ellie

A Poem by JR

Ellie, you deserved better than that

lying on your side in the street

your water spilling like wine into the concrete

an exponential amount, you had that much?

I tried to hold it in but my fingers

were too light to stop the flow

the rend too impossible

as wide as the shadow you cast

and twice as deep;

You were still trying to run so

I held you tightly to me

felt your muscles jumping

your lungs huffing, your heart beating

like a two-stroke under my hands

everything went stiller, stiller

and then finally… stilled

even the sparrows fell silent

to mark the moment

stained my t-shirt as

I held your body;

You were still trying to run and

you finally made it, my little girl

my sweet little thing

you finally went where

nothing could ever hold you back.

"As wide as the shadow you cast and twice as deep" Beautiful. I felt the pain in this, the hopelessness, even the frantic attempt to help. Well done.

Thank you so much, that's the feel I was hoping would come through.
