A Poem by JR

I hardly ever think of you anymore

when once you were all I had;

we were never comfortable with one another

I didn’t appreciate your structure

you didn’t appreciate my freedom

we were always at odds

like knives laid out on a table

and I told everyone how I couldn’t wait

to get away from you

your dust and snows,

your pitted roads;

I have seen your beauty and took it in

leaning on the hood of my ticking car

while the sun set orange over your body

I have run my fingers through your sand

taken your waters into my mouth

and swallowed

you burned me twice

and I took it like a man

I’ve been over every inch of you

tasted from all you have to offer

dust and snows, your pitted roads…

I hardly ever think of you,

anymore.
