Walled Garden

Walled Garden

A Poem by JR

Nothing ever flies within this walled garden

though they try and convince you you’ve grown wings

nothing ever sings or dances within this walled garden

but they will put on a show anyway

and try and get you to click share

no one ever really laughs within this walled garden

they don’t even know how, fear of chuckle

they will swallow your memes with a gulp

no one can love within this walled garden

they won’t let their scarred hearts

breathe air again, or their lungs take in the taste

of their home dirt

everyone seems an enemy in here

no one runs or walks within this walled garden

they have stolen all our shoes and boxed them up

high up on the shelf, out of reach

no touch of flesh within this walled garden

though they make you think

that’s what it’s all about

no windows un-shuttered within this walled garden

but look, they claim, there’s choice!

no doors open out from within this walled garden

the walls too high, the ivy won’t bear weight

no way to tunnel under, or climb over

that was the point, they said,

all along.
