A Poem by JR

I’m taking down all my fences

nail-by-nail, board by board

I’m bringing them low

no need for them now,

I plan to let the wild in

share my space with the animals

who root and rut just like me

I don’t fear their teeth and claws and sting

after all, they don’t startle for my shadow

seems only fair to return the favor;

I’ll take down these fences

so I can live among the wild

like I was originally made

just something that beats and sings and s***s

just something that scents threat in the wind

just something that howls for the hell of it

just something that finds unadulterated joy

in the earth and water, fire and sky

just something that f***s when it wants

and doesn’t think about it afterwards

just something that eats from what it finds

and doesn’t have to seek out the meat

just something that wants to sprint and feel wind

running its fingers through baroque fur, above skin

just something that fights when it feels anger

just something allowed to use its teeth, really

f*****g sink them in

just something that sleeps so easily under

the stare of uncaring alien stars

I’ll rip down these fences

I’ll tear down these fences

I’ll batter down these fences

so I can live among the wild

like I was originally made.
