On The Rocks

On The Rocks

A Poem by JR

This day and the one before it ran like oil

we sat behind that stilted house tonight

and drank our whiskey with rocks

ghosts, you said, it’s all about the ghosts,

and I agreed

both those we make,

and the ones that are made for us

chains, you said, I’m bound in chains,

and I agreed

both those we forged,

and those forged for us

forget you said, we must forget,

and goddamn oh goddamn, I agreed

both those memories we’ve let go,

and those taken from us

drink, you said, we always drink

and I agreed

both those we’ve poured,

and those that will be poured for us

smoke you said, there’s smoke in the wind

and I agreed

both from fires we’ve set,

and those that burn for us

this day ran like oil, and the one before it;

blue dreams before the fog

I told you of my heart

and you agreed

both those beats we’ve lost,

and those that lost us

what greases these, the gears of time?

whiskey, we drink it on the rocks.
