Rabbit

Rabbit

A Poem by JR

I sometimes catch your scent in the strangest places

at the grocery store, when someone passes

and leaves a little of you in their wake

at the gas station, when my mind is a million miles off

catch the smell of you in the wind and pause

like a rabbit, still, nose turned to the breeze

making coffee, this morning, I still don’t know the source

but it was you, hanging there in the kitchen

like a boneless ghost, putting your hand on my shoulder

I don’t go seeking you out, you just come to me

in the strangest places

when I least expect your presence

and even though it hurts a little,

because of thoughtless time,

I don’t mind

because in that moment, taking in your scent

I remember holding you
