Leigh

A Poem by JR

I know you’re sitting out there tonight in the city

with a heaviness in your lungs

you’re coughing up your misery

in the smog

and you remember me

the way I held you when you skinned your knees

driving your bike head-on

into that maple tree

given your genetic eyes from my mother

you could not see

oh my girl, oh my darling

I wish you’d stayed home with me

here under these old oak trees

you should have stayed home

you should have stayed home

with me
