Ain't Enough

Ain't Enough

A Poem by JR

There ain’t enough beer in here to take it away

not enough drink in this whole bar to drown it

no, it waits there, under the stool

down around your ankles, where shadow pools deep

it waits in the bathroom, where the singing mutes

it waits under the wink and nod

the handshakes, and the hairdos

it waits under the lamplights, where the crowd

chokes down their cigarettes

the skirts don’t help, nor the men

with their chuckles and knuckle bumps

nor the ceiling, where the smoke used to hang

leaving behind only this brown stain

no, there ain’t enough beer

in this whole damn bar

to drown the downer of being alone

And there never will be enough to drown out such sorrow. As a species we crave companionship and loneliness is quite incredibly debilitating and the pity is, that there are so many who just suffer in silence.

Such a shame, when all it might take to lighten the burden is a smile, or a selfless act of kindness.

Beccy.
