Ocean

Ocean

A Poem by JR

Cast adrift in a fog sea with no land in sight

no cry of the gulls their gray shapes humped against the sky

my raft is leaking, soon the water will swallow me

I know I must swim but… where?

there is no delineation between ocean and shore

and I see the dark fins cutting waves,

scenting the wind for my flesh

throwing their hips back, and forth

I know I must swim but… where?

I have cast out my notes in whiskey bottles

but no one reads them, or responds

there are no voices within this cold white world

but my own

still deeper this raft sinks, oh the waves

will eat me whole, gulp my bones into the deep

I know I must swim but…

where?
