Last Time

Last Time

A Poem by JR

Last time things didn’t go so well

last time you shot me down

last time I broke my bones on the kitchen floor

last time I considered jar curses

last time I fell and muscles wouldn’t catch me

last time I howled choked misery under the moon

last time I caught your eyes above the table

last time I drank myself stupid

last time I beat my chest, finger to God, three times

last time broke every promise I ever made

last time immutable I called for angels or demons

last time I almost lost myself

next time I hope will be the same

last time I found myself again

JR, this reads as a "last time" promise made to oneself and others, and broken countless times. This speaks to good intentions and perhaps the prison some might know as addiction, some type of mental illness or abuse. The narrator is aware of his shortcomings but seems powerless to change course. It seems hope remains, but its a frayed thread made more fragile with each broken promise. Your writing is always powerful and I think repeating "last time" is a brilliant way to convey the narrator's own doubts.

Thanks man. I like the almost lyric quality that comes from repeated lines.
