Meditation With John

Meditation With John

A Poem by JR

Breathe into the desert, alone

wrapped in the scratch of horsehair

make feast of honey and crickets

out here the stars howl and moan

out here the coyote wails

out here the wind wracks and cries

make a bed of bleached sand, eyes to heaven

forty nights of silence, expecting a dream

out here there are no distractions

out here there are no other voices

out here there are no lamia or magi

forty nights, then forty more

waiting for the dream to come

waiting, breathing

alone

Alone, but denying temptation and Satan’s his desires. A friend once told me “self control” is not what we think it is. He explained that those who take the right path, avoid life’s temptations, put themselves far from such temptations. That mindset has obvious Biblical foundations, and I’m reminded of such in this poem. A good write, sir.
