Deconstruction

Deconstruction

A Poem by JR

The house looked so durable, despite its age

I can only tell so much from the outside

settled itself on the hill just a little above all the rest

lovely little three bed, with sterling paint

a long solid, sloped roof

I had no idea the rot until I got inside

no clue the plaster is cracked

joists are inclined in an unsafe slant

edifice that rocks and moans in the night

shifts and tumbles, rolls over to the right

It doesn’t do well with seasonal change

all the doorways that should open, stick

windows rock in their grooves

hallways cant at the oddest angle

so I’m always feeling unease

I can only see so much, from the outside

this small shaded house on the hill, raven wing

perched just a little above everyone else

… no idea something that appeared so strong

could fall from its very foundation

I will move out before it comes down

and crushes me

Not all is as it seems on the surface. This truth is applicable not only to houses, but also to people and relationships. These, however, can be a bit more messy in their endings that moving from a defective house.
