Chapter 77

Chapter 77

A Chapter by Jemma Packman

Indigo, Summer, Ethan, Gaz and Priscilla sat in the ice cream parlour. Summer says “You threatened him?”

Gaz says “I aggressively persuaded him, and Indigo used legal terms.”

Priscilla says “You tag-teamed him?”

“You could put it like that. But he deserved it. He shouldn’t speak to kids like that.”

Summer says “And you’re going to find a new coach?”

“I am the new coach.”

“You?”

“Got a problem with that?”

“No.”

“Good, because you and Indigo are going to help me.”

Indigo says “What? I never agreed to that.”

Summer says “Why me? I get Indi helping but why me?”

Gaz says “You know where the kids can go after a game, maybe even get some sponsers.”

Priscilla says “What’s Indigo going to do? Drive the team bus?”

“Miss All-State champ over there is going to help me teach them.”

Priscilla looks at Indigo. “You used to play?”

Indigo says “Don’t sound so shocked. Yes, I played.”

“You were sporty?”

“So was Summer.”

Ethan says “Mommy helps me practice sometimes. Are you really going to be a coach, Momma?”

“I don’t know, Ethan. I haven’t played for a long time.”

“I can help you, if you want?”

Gaz says “You can’t turn down an offer like that, sis.”

Indigo says “I’ll think about it. What about your job, Gaz? Won’t this conflict?”

“I already spoke to my boss and he thinks it’s a great idea. We could even get the students involved.”

Summer says “That’s great. Now all you have to do is get the manager to agree.”

“Did that too. First practice is Friday.”

Indigo says “You work quickly.”

Priscilla says “Sometimes too quickly.”

Summer laughs. Gaz says “Babe, that was once and you did tease me before we actually started.”

Summer says “Boys and their lack of stamina.”

“And how long can you go?”

“Unfair question. I don’t have to recharge the same way you do.”

Priscilla says “She can go for hours.”

Indigo says “How would you know?”

“Either your walls are thinner than you think, or you’re a screamer.”

Indigo blushes. Gaz says “Sums, teach me?”

“I wouldn’t mind you showing him. I’d happily be your model.”

Indigo says “Not happening.”

Summer kisses Indigo’s cheek and says “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t do it. My skills are all yours now.”

Ethan says “Mommy, does Uncle Gaz need help?”

“He does but we can’t help him.”

“Why not?”

“Because he has to learn for himself.”

“Can’t anyone help?”

Priscilla says “I can give him hints.”

“That’s good.”

Gaz says “Why’s that good?”

“Because if you’re bad at something, someone should help you get better.”

Priscilla says “Out of the mouth of babes.”

Gaz says “Should we get going so you can start tutoring me?”

“You did buy me ice cream. Bye, ladies. Prince Ethan, do I get a hug before I go?”

Ethan hugs Priscilla and says “Cilla, are you going to have a party for Mommy’s birthday?”

Priscilla kisses Ethan’s cheek. “When is it?”

“Saturday.”

Priscilla stands up with Gaz. “We’ll see, my prince.” Priscilla leans over, kisses the top of Summer’s head then kisses Indigo’s cheek. “We’ll talk tomorrow.”

Gaz high-fives Ethan and says “See you all Friday for practice.”

Gaz and Priscilla leave. Indigo says “Sums, is it really your birthday Saturday?”

Summer says “Not important. It’s time to get Ethan home to bed.”

Ethan says “Can Momma read me a story tonight?”

Indigo says “If it’s ok with your mommy.”

Summer says “Fine by me.”

“Ready to go?”

Ethan nods and they all leave.
