Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by Jemma Packman

SEVEN YEARS LATER

Indigo sat at a bar with Reuben Ascher, Iona Johnson and Priscilla Qwan. Reuben says "A toast to Indigo, from lowly intern to junior partner."

Priscilla says "In less than ten years. How long did it take you?"

Indigo says "Seven years three months and seventeen days"

"And how many partners did you have to sleep with?"

"None. I'm very proud to say I did it through hard work."

Iona says "So you should be. Cheers." Everyone says "Cheers." Everyone has a drink. "Does this mean we'll get to see you more often?"

Indigo says I don't know. It could."

Priscilla says "I hope so. We miss you."

Reuben says "I've never understood why you work like you do."

Indigo says "I started out putting everything into it, can't start slacking now."

Iona says "At least until you get partner."

Reuben says "But why? There has to be a reason?"

            Priscilla says "We won't know."

            "Obviously."

"Indigo got dumped when she got the internship."

            Iona says "Priscilla!"

            "It's true."

            Reuben says "Is it?"

Indigo says "I guess. I'm not sure what happened."

"Tell me. You know I hate half a story."

Iona says "Do you have to hear it now? We're meant to be celebrating."

Indigo says "It's ok. If I tell him, he'll stop asking. Right?"

            Reuben says "Of course."

            Iona says "Promise?"

            "Cross my heart."

Indigo says "Last I knew she was on her way to mine to celebrate. She said she had to pick something up. She never showed. I rang her, got no answer. Rang her house, her mom told me she thought she was with me. Next day I still hadn't heard from her so I went to her house. Her mom told me I couldn't see her for a while and to give her some time. I gave her a week, went back to find an empty house. A neighbour said they'd gone away for a while, gave me a letter and that was that. I took the internship and left at the end of that week. Haven't seen or heard from her since."

            "What did the letter say?"

"Don't let me hold you back."

            "That's all it said?"

            "Yeah. Any other questions?"

"Just one. What was this b***h's name?"

            "Summer. Summer-Rose. And she wasn't a b***h."

            Priscilla says "Still defending her?"

"Can't defend or prosecute properly without all the facts."

Iona says "I got a fact for you. We are going to get you so drunk tonight you won't remember your own name. Ready?"

            "Do I have a choice?"

            "Not really."

            "Where are we going?"

"As this is sort of a homecoming as well, we're taking you to Aphrodites."

            "What have you done?"

            Priscilla says "You'll see."

"I don't like the sound of that."

A really good follw on to the prologue. You manage to develop the characters while still having us wonder more- what happened to Summer-Rose? I'm really enjoying this story and will read more as you release
