American Beach Romance

American Beach Romance

American Beach Romance

My embraced blisses

Often include the smell of cut grass

Right after a long thunderstorm

In the spring,

Or being on a hiatus

From a long work week,

Where I am transported to

A breathtaking place

with the smell of cedar chests

And sea salt drifting in,

Glass jars of collected seashells

Grace the dusty mantels,

While I sit before a blazing fire

Dreaming of the shipwrecks

That took place long ago, or

Summertime afternoons in the sun,

While in a pivotal relationship

Of love,

Thinking about what would be

My favorite place in the world,

Similar to my own private coastal island

Surrounded by quartz aqua-blue

Soothing waves filled with some

Refreshing sprays of cool captivating

Opal Mists touching our bare skin,

Or a small town where we drop into the pleasant shops

On Main Street,

Among stately homes and quaint white

Churches,

Somewhere whaling captains once walked,

Polished doorknockers remain

Alongside many window boxes overflowing

With bright aromatic flowers

And some side streets still have

Dark cobblestones,

Acres of wooded moors

Surround the little tourist town

Of old-fashioned businesses

As the movie house is playing

An old black & white classic

And a private museum holds washed up

Treasures of the nearby seas,

There are vibrant cottages wearing

Pink climbing roses and the fragrant

Air drifts to the East,

Coastal breezes mingle with the rich

Scent,

As we find a tiny bookstore to browse full

Of timeless volumes, you recall that

In the center of this magical

Town is also a spacious library

Where a grand piano is gracing the entry

To the circular climbing marble stairs

Offering several floors of arranged books,

to visiting patrons.

While resting on a shaded park bench outside this

Towering structure, you ask me to go to dinner at a

Cordial nautical club,

That offers lively singers and dramatic dancers on

A stage below profuse colored lights.

There, we take pleasure in a succulent meal

With a bottle of bubbly Pink Champagne

And lush dessert is split,

As the shining platform clears of entertainment,

Ending our shared perfect day

In our holiday paradise.

These solid gold memories make us

Inseparable,

Because this marvel day created

our united memoir,

Like wild wine vines of a grand courtyard,

We realize we are the best obsession

That ever happened to each other

After this short-shared enchantment

Along the mystical shores where rose-gold

Sunsets linger longer before star-studded sky appears,

And being near the flourishing oceanic waters brings

Peace and longing for each other's

company,

A time-worn photograph

Reminds us of this shared journey after

It has passed,

Bringing to the surface those old

Longings and cherished feelings

Among the weathered beaches. -- J. E. Cook ©2018

There are a million sparkling details that make an oceanfront town unique & attractive -- I think you managed to capture every one in your poem! I'm in awe of people who are such astute observers of their surroundings that you can sit down & pour it out with such an artful tumble! Now I'm inspired to try to capture my own memories of beachtowns that haunted my past! Thanks for sharing (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Sounds like quite the ideal place to visit and dwell in! Your words and description made me think of all those quaint little villages and towns that are scattered throughout America and even the UK, where modern living lives symbiotically with the structures and remnants of the past. There is just something wonderful about getting away from the skyscraper dominated cities to reside for a time in a small township setting, surrounded by nature and with the soothing sounds of footsteps on cobblestones beneath.

Your description, as always, sets the scene for the reader and transports them to the place you have in mind. And what a place this is!

Fine work, Josie.
